Can your manger send you home from work because it’s raining?

“An agreement is an agreement, and the employer and the employee will both be bound by it,” says Sindre Hornnes, one of LO’s youth advisers.
What exactly is a fair-weather job?
Many young people are offered what are called fair-weather jobs, in other words, jobs where you only work when the sun is shining.
However, according to the Labour Inspection Authority there are no rules specifically governing fair-weather jobs in the Working Environment Act.
“The most important point is to look at what your contract of employment says. Read it carefully before signing,” says Beate Karlsen of the Labour Inspection Authority.
Two common problems
According to LO there are two issues that frequently crop up in connection with fair-weather jobs
1. You are contacted and asked to work on the same day.
As an on-call substitute you can always say no.
“The employee must have the option of saying yes or no to the shift,” says Hornes.
2. You have agreed to work a shift but are told that you will not be needed after all.
“You must still be paid. If you have agreed to work a shift you must be paid even if you are not able to work,” says Hornes.
However, if the collective agreement at your place of work says that shifts can be withdrawn without pay, other rules will apply.

Can your manager send you home in the middle of the shift?
Yes, but not without paying you for the full shift.
If you were due to work from 8 o’clock until 3:30 but were sent home at 2 o’clock, you have the right to be paid for the full day.
“If not, your manager is breaking the law,” says LO’s Hornnes.

If you haven’t received the money you are entitled to you must tell your employer.
